In an earlier post entitled Week #15 – 90 In 90 , I talked about going without TV for 90 days. I wanted to share a brief update on how that is going and what is has done for my life.
Well it’s been quite an experience. I went from the habit of watching TV several hours a day to nothing on 1/1/18. It’s amazing just how much TV had become a part of my life. I would use it to procrastinate, to escape and feel different, as well as a way to relax. It was so ingrained in my life I would have a natural thought to turn it on and start watching. Turn it on after dinner, turn it on before bed the be up 2 more hours instead of sleeping or reading a book. Turn it on during the day to take a break. Just like when I smoked and was having a cup of coffee or after a meal my brain use to fire off “light up a cigarette it will taste so good right now”. It was such a habit and part of my daily life, I have been pulled in these directions since the first day. But, knowing I had made a promise and commitment to myself, I have not given in to those old ways.
Now 40+ days into my 90-in-90 those old thoughts and old habits are atrophying; they are getting weaker and weaker! Very cool!
I am enjoying not watching. As I reflect on how much it had become a part of my life I think about just how much I’ve been bombarding my subconscious mind with crap! With stuff that is ultimately holding me back and preventing me from becoming the best version of myself possible. Instead of letting the TV advertise in my brain, I am taking control of what goes in!
However, I do find myself finding other ways to procrastinate. Interruptions, being unorganized, not prioritizing what I should be focusing on, and napping. At the end of the day, when we remove something we need to replace it with something OR a vacuum will exist and if we aren’t controlling what goes in it’s place, then something will. So, this is the next step in the process for me. TV is definitely going to be out the window past the 90 days as I can see just how negative it has been in my life. Quite frankly it’s been a waste of my time!
Going forward I am going to focus on taking action, living each day as if it’s my last. W/out action everything else is just a waste of time. It is time for action to be coupled with the exercises and thoughts. This is what I fill the TV vacuum with – Getting Organized, and ACTION!
What would the person I intend to become do next? He takes focused action towards his goals and he gets organized to eliminate distractions and excuses!
